re:Learn – From Chatbots to Open Badges – April 2018

This is re:Learn, a short space to share some of the things that sparked my interest this week, things I’m learning, seeing in new light, or simply re:learning.

Let’s dial it back a bit, not all tools to support learning need to be fancy and shiny. Anki is a multimedia flashcard application that allows you to write your own flashcards and review topics of interest. It some features that support very sound instructional design best practices such as spaced repetition.

More than simple gamification badges, in general, that stay in a closed system, open badges are a technology open standard that is compromised of not just an image file representing an achievement or skill acquired at a given level, but also metadata that is portable and readable by different systems and tools. The receiver of a badge can decide to claim the open badge or not. Once accepted, a badge can be collected, shared, displayed, mixed into pathways that represent a user’s unique progress in their career. Systems can be created deriving from this standard that would allow users to, for instance, create their own pathways of skills and achievements yet to be gained in a way that matters to them and their career based on their history.

Being an open standard, the sky is the limit on what can be achieved with this meaningful metadata format.

Inspirock. So much to learn from this automated trip planner. What would your personal learning path look like if you had your personal learning portal that adapts to your needs and preferences similar to what Inspirock does for travelers?

Methodology of the day

Celebration Grid.

I was sitting in a meeting at SAP the other day when a (very innovative) manager from our internal developer training department introduced this interesting concept of Celebration Grid as a way to visualize the progress from failing (as they say in Design Thinking “fail early, fail often”) toward lessons learned and eventually success.

Artificial Intelligence by Usborne Children’s Books. Yes, a children’s book… We find ourselves reading technical books, and other books for adults so often. But sometimes it is a children’s book you’re reading with your kids at night that helps your brain make unexpected connections and insights.

Automata. That was a path I was led recently while reading a book my 5-year-old borrowed from school.

The idea of automation and artificial intelligence has intrigued mankind for as long as we can remember, see The Writer Automaton in action, for a creepy good example.

Bots are everywhere now. It’s one of THE TOP buzzwords in most industries.
