Free Image/Graphics Editors
In the field of instructional design (being it corporate, education or independent sectors) it is sometimes hard to have the latest and most expensive editors out there. Many people coming into this field now that need to create materials and edit images know how hard ti can be to save up the money to buy the Adobe products, even with the student editions out there.
Here is a short list of free editors out there that might not be as complete as the Adobe suites but will do for many of those tasks you would perform on the expensive tools.
Some are cross-platform, others aren’t… this is a late night post that I will be back to separating these by categories and platform types (or at least adding the supported platforms in the descriptions). That is, if I remember to come back to this post later on… 🙂
Paint.NET – basic image editor.
GIMP – open source image editor (similar to Photoshop).
GIMPshop – version of GIMP that most resembles Adobe Photoshop’s interface (for those used to working on Photoshop).
GIMPhoto – This one is even more similar to Photoshop.
Inkscape – open source vector graphic editor.
DrawPlus – powerful and intuitive vector graphic editor.
Pencil – open source animation (Flash) editor.
SynFig – vector based animation editor (similar to Flash).
AnimPixels – unique animation editor for isometric pixel art.
