Project Wonderland’s Future

The Project Wonderland development team just found out that development resources will no longer be applied to the project, Sun/Oracle resources that is.

However, the avid team plans to keep up the great work they have done so far counting on the open source community. The team wiill soon release Project Wonderland v0.5 Preview Release 3 this week.

Nicole Yanchelovich (project lead) reminds us of the countless university projects and corporations utilizing Project Wonderland as a virtual world platform and several companies offering Wonderland-based services. Also  noted in her post on January 30, 2010, is the power of the community that keeps the project alive and she calls for participation:

“Any concrete help you can give us would, of course, be welcome, but what we are asking for now is your moral support and your continued participation in our thriving community. Let’s stand together in our determination to keep this project moving forward. If you would like to contact me privately, please feel free to do so at nicoley @ dev.java.net.”

Open Books and TextBooks Online, Free

Taking after the movement of open source (free – as in freedom) software development, knowledge and information has also been “open sourced” (and crowdsourced) as new Web technologies allow for flexibility and ease of online collaboration in generating content.

Textbooks are now on the same route and here are a few interesting resources for those who are tired of paying absurd prices for academia content out there. Question: Why don’t more experts and professors join the trend of open books?

WikiBooks – From the same company that maintains WikiPedia, this is an incredible collection of open books in any subject imaginable. Worthwhile.

Flat World Knowledge - This website’s goal is to share quality, peer-reviewed books in many areas of expertise. The idea is that faculty will publish the books under the Creative Commons license and allow students to access tailored, good quality content without having to pay the (sometimes) outrageous prices for textbooks. They already have some interesting content up. From their site, we have their definition of an open book: “It is a great book by a great author, peer-reviewed, professionally edited & developed, and published under a Creative Commons license. Faculty may tailor the book to their needs. Students may access the book free online or buy an affordable print, audio, or handheld format. Students get choice; faculty get control; authors earn rapid market share, greater royalties over time, and do some good!”

Open Book Project - They still don’t have much in their collection of books. But here is what they aim to accomplish and I hope they succeed: “The Open Book Project is aimed at the educational community and seeks to encourage and coordinate collaboration among students and teachers for the development of high quality, freely distributable textbooks and educational materials on a wide range of topics.”

TextBook Revolution – This site’s mission on their frontpage says it all: “Our approach is to bring all of the free textbooks we can find together in one place, review them, and let the best rise to the top and find their way into the hands of students in classrooms around the world.”

Project Wonderland’s New Features

Project Wonderland is a project run by Sun Microsystems that aims at developing a tool kit for the creation of custom virtual worlds (MUVEs).

The upcoming .5 release promises some interesting features as well as some powerful improvements to the interface and system as a whole.

Sun Microsystem’s Project Wonderland and The Immersive Education Grid

The Media Grid Immersive Education Initiative led by Aaron Walsh from the Boston University has been on the cutting edge of virtual environments experiments for a learning purpose. They hold constant meetings in Second Life, have been experimenting with different virtual worlds and not was Wonderland’ turn for a more “official” educational event run by the Immersive Education participants.

Sun Microsystem’s Project Wonderland’s Security Levels

In this blog post Nicole invites Timothy Wright, a Ph.D. candidate from University of Notre Dame, to write a post about his research interest in Project Wonderland and Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs) from a security and data storage perspective.

His research project has driven him to come up with different “privileges” and status for users which dictates what files, objects and places they can see and/or modify.

This brings much more relief for companies and academic institutions that plan on adopting Virtual Worlds for learning and collaboration but are worried about data security.

Like Wright says, the advantage of Wonderland over other Virtual Worlds is the fact that it is in its early stages and already considering these issues, which means that these types of functionality will be built in the program and not “around it” once it is already built, which is the case with most Virtual Worlds out there (if they even consider such issues at all.
